The MDI Photo Club and the MDIslander newspaper have entered into a partnership to showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of our region and to promote public awareness and interest in photography and our club. Any club member may participate in submitting their photographs for consideration to be published in the paper. Here are details of how this collaboration will work:
- Color photos are preferred, but if you have an image that is better suited to black and white, the paper will accept these as well.
- Images should be from MDI and the surrounding area. Because the paper is “hyper local focused”, images from other parts of the US or abroad are not desired.
- Photos of any genre are acceptable. The Editor is particularly interested in photographs of people. As long as people are in a public space, the paper does not require permission from the person you are photographing for it to be published (e.g., “someone on the street in Bar Harbor is fair game”.) If someone is on their own property, then permission would be required. If you can get the person(s) names of who you photograph, that would be helpful as the paper would like to indicate who the person(s) is.
- The paper is also interested in photographs that are particularly timely or capture a noteworthy event,
- Submitted images should be in jpg format and be sized between 2-4 MB.
- The paper will not restrict how many member photographs could be printed in each issue. Depending on how newsworthy of a week it is, they may have space to publish more than one image. The Editor told me her preference is to have at least one photograph from all sources per page of the paper to make the paper more interesting and attractive.
- For each image published, the paper will include a short caption description and an acknowledgement of the photographer, and reference to our club, something like “MDIphotoclub.org“. They will not list or credit anyone’s personal photography business. There will be no remuneration for published photographs.
- Feel free to submit images as often as you like. If the paper doesn’t use your image in the forthcoming week’s issue, they will keep it on file for possible use at another time.
- To submit a photograph for consideration, please email it, a description of the photo, and your name as you’d like it spelled, to Kenn Chandler at: outreachcoordinator@mdiphotoclub.org
