Congratulations to the winners of the 2016 Student Photo Contest.
First Place: The Broken Road by Delanie Shepard, 11th Grade, MDI High School ($75 prize)
The judging committee appreciates the photographer’s effort of creating this image using the technique of pre-visualization and exploring creativity through a non-literal representation. This image shows an elegant balance between the strong geometric shapes created by the symmetric yellow lines and the softer human form providing a heavier weight to the composition.
Second Place: Sunset on Cedar Swamp by Emma Forthofer, 11th Grade, MDI High School ($50 prize)
The judging committee appreciates the photographer exploring the use of narrative, by creating a story. This image conveys a strong sense of atmosphere, mood, and drama through the choice of silhouetting the human form against the setting sun. The photographer creates just enough space for the viewer to create their own story.
Third Place: Eye of the Storm by Jackie Winn, 12th Grade, MDI High School ($25 prize)
This image instantly creates an impact and continues to draw your eye into the photograph. The judging committee appreciates the photographers use of simplicity, bold color, and use of light to direct the viewer’s attention. The sharp eye defines a clear subject, and at the same time thesoft curve abstracts the face.
Honorable Mention: Roughly Pointed by Matthew Lambert, 12th Grade, MDI High School ($10 prize)
The judging committee appreciates the photographer exploring a unique perspective and viewpoint. The composition makes use of leading lines and tonality, dark to light areas, directing the viewer’s eye. The choice of black & white strengthens the overall image.
