College of the Atlantic Campus
Our October 29th outing was a visit to the campus of the College of the Atlantic where there were a variety of options to practice photography skills. There are many buildings of varying architectural styles, including “The Turrets,” one of the few Bar Harbor cottages to survive the fire of ’47. There is a stretch of shoreline with views to the east and a dock with further views. There are also some gardens including some old stone walls in varying states of repair and many venerable old trees and other flora. The Dorr Museum was open as well.
Darkroom Tour
Josh Winer of COA spoke to us about the college and told us about today’s students and their interests in photography. He than gave us a tour of COA’s working wet darkroom and explained what it takes to set up your own darkroom including how to safely dispose of hazardous chemicals. Much has changed since some of us worked in darkrooms decades ago, but the good news is that film photography and wet darkroom processing are alive and well and many products are available.
